ACTUAL DIMENSIONS - The measurements of a piece of lumber after it
has been cut and surfaced. For example, a 2x4's actual dimensions
are 1 7/16 x 3 1/2 inches.
AUGER - A hand or machine-operated tool with a screw-like shank for boring
holes in soil.
BALUSTERS - Each of a series of often ornamental short posts or pillars
on a rail.
BEAM - A straight structural member that acts primarily to resist
transverse loads; a structural element which sustains transverse loading
and develops internal forces of bending and shear in resisting the loads;
an inclusive term for joists, girders, rafters, and purlins.
BUILDING CODES - Regulations detailing accepted materials and methods of
building, such as the size of the deck, setback distances, railing and
stair construction, footing depths, fastening methods, lumber types for
certain deck components and fence or screen height around the deck.
Usually adopted by city, county or state building departments; most
counties have local building codes.
CANTILEVER - A construction method that involves extending the joists
beyond the support beam or the support beam beyond the posts.
COMPOSITE - An item manufactured out of wood fiber and plastic to form a
profile with superior performance properties.
COMPOSITE SCREWS - Fasteners that minimize
mushrooming of composite material.
DECKING - The decking boards that serve as the walking surface.
END JOISTS - The joists at the end of a series of parallel joists.
EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION - Nails and boards expand when they heat up and
contract when they cool down, especially as outside temperature changes.
FASTENERS - Generic term for nails, bolts, screws and other
connecting devices.
FOOTING - A masonry section, usually concrete, in a rectangular form wider
than the bottom of the foundation wall or pier it supports.
GIRDER - A beam that supports other beams; a very large beam, especially
one that is built up from smaller elements; a timber beam used to support
wall beams or joists.
HDG (HOT-DIPPED GALVANIZED) - Twist nail, casing nail, common nail,
decking screw, etc., with thick zinc coating and rough surface.
ICBO - International Conference of Building Officials
ICC - International Code Council
INSET - An area of a deck that has been cut out to accommodate landscape
elements such as trees.
JOIST - A usually horizontal, structural member used as a floor, decking,
ceiling or roof framing member.
LEDGER - A wood or metal member bolted to a masonry wall to carry floor
joists ceiling joists or rafters.
MUSHROOMING - Displacement of
material above the fastener head.
NOMINAL DIMENSIONS - The identifying dimensions of a piece of lumber (e.g.
2" x 4") which are larger than the actual dimensions (1 7/16" x 3 1/2").
PILOT HOLE - A small hole drilled into a piece of lumber to prevent it
from splitting when it receives a screw or nail.
POST - A timber set on end to support a wall, girder or other member of
the structure.
RAIL POST - A vertical member that supports the railing.
RISER - A single vertical increment of a stair; the vertical face between
two treads in a stair.
SBCCI - Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc.
SKEWING - Driving two nails at opposing angles. This technique creates a
sounder connection by “hooking” the boards together as well as reducing
the possibility of splitting.
SKIRT - Solid band of horizontal wood members installed around the deck
perimeter to conceal exposed ends of joists and deck boards.
SKIRTING - Finishing element at baseboard of stairway, around the
circle perimeter or around posts.
SPAN - The distance between supports for a beam, girder, truss, vault,
arch or other horizontal structural device.
STRINGLINE - A string used to establish a line or to mark a line on a
construction site.
TREAD - The horizontal surface of a step in a stair.
